The highest number of times your heart can beat in a minute. Almost every heart-rate zone and score is calculated from it.

When it helps

Worth getting roughly right, because a wrong figure throws off all your zones.

When it doesn't

Day to day. It is a calibration figure, not something to check on every run.

The common myth

The myth: your max heart rate is 220 minus your age. The reality: that formula can be ten to fifteen beats out in either direction.
