Mostly a feel-good and marketing story for beginners. The measurable benefits are small and inconsistent in the research, and the situations where they help most, like very long races and travel-related swelling, aren't beginner situations. Comfortable, but not doing much.

What it does

Compression socks and sleeves apply graduated pressure to the lower leg, intended to improve blood flow and reduce muscle vibration and swelling. Some runners report their legs feel fresher during or after long efforts, but controlled studies show small and inconsistent effects on actual performance and recovery.

Do you need compression socks for running?

No. There's nothing about beginner running that calls for compression gear. If you find a pair comfortable there's no harm in wearing them, but don't buy them expecting a performance or recovery edge, because the evidence doesn't support it.

When should you get Compression Socks?

There's no real trigger point for a beginner. Some long-distance runners use them for ultra-distance recovery or long-haul travel; that's well down the track and optional even then.

Who are Compression Socks best for?

Long-distance and ultra runners who personally find them helpful, and people managing specific circulation issues on medical advice. Not a beginner purchase.

The catch

Easy to mistake the snug, supported feeling for a real recovery effect. The research says the effect is small at best for most runners.

Buy this instead

Nothing. Solid sleep, easy days and gradual mileage do far more for recovery than any sock.
